Light It Up

September 1, 2011  by Betsy Johnson

When clients think of stage and set design, they think of set construction and video projection. Sometimes, they need to be reminded of a third important element: lighting design.

Young Presidents’ Organization at the Milwaukee Art Museum

Creative and exciting light design can make a good show go from ordinary to extraordinary. Everyone sees video projection at shows, but when you see a show with excellent lighting, it seems more high-end. As Brian Dawson, owner of SoundSource Entertainment and Intelligent Lighting Design of Texas, notes, “Professional event lighting is the most cost-effective solution for any event planner looking to transform their event.”

If you need proof, go to any play or musical.  In Broadway, the lighting designer is the first contact. The light design has the potential to help tell the story, change the mood, and set the ambiance. In some plays, the lights has even played the part of a character.

So why is it that in corporate theatre, it’s often the opposite – people talk to the set designer, the videographer, the graphic design artist, then the lighting designer? After years of experience, we know better. We know the difference light design can make in the eyes of the audience, so we have someone there from the start with us every step of the way. One of the first calls we make is to the lighting designer so he or she can be involved in the entire process rather than just being an afterthought.

The lighting design makes or breaks the story.

Tri-Marq sat down with graduate medical education students at @aurorahealthcare who are in their Transitional Year program to hear stories about their time at Aurora. Utilizing one location-shoot day and a 6-person crew with a 4-camera set, we captured the graduates in a roundtable style. This creative approach captures their conversation in a natural way, allowing them to organically tell stories and experiences, leading the GME program. The roundtable style keeps authenticity at the forefront and encourages audiences to stay engaged with the story, making the video more effective for marketing and recruiting purposes. With the wide range of content recorded, we created additional short, digestible clips that are repurposed for social media.

@aurorahealthcare wanted to create a video showcas @aurorahealthcare wanted to create a video showcasing the state-of-the-art care facilities at Aurora Sinai Medical Center, it’s community partners, and the programs they offer to people in downtown Milwaukee, many who lack access to care. It features how the spirit of the Aurora teammates feeling connected to one another, living the purpose and mission, working in sync to make sure they’re all driving towards the same goal to help people meet their health care needs.

The story is told by Dr. Iroegbu, President of Aurora Sinai Medical Center & Aurora St. Luke’s South Shore through an interview we recorded on location. The powerful, yet straightforward story is elevated by combining beautiful b-roll footage, graphics and soundtrack. Tri-Marq is proud to have created this compelling and informative video to promote Aurora’s commitment to the Milwaukee community.

Tri-Marq conducted three days on location recording interviews and b-roll footage, in multiple locations. In addition, Tri-Marq handled project management, creative design, on-site production, editing, sound/audio design, color correction, and script writing.
