What’s In a Name? | The Marquette Connection

October 23, 2023  by Alaina Salas

Who is Tri-Marq? Why the name Tri-Marq? And why are we always doing work for Marquette University? Today, we are answering all of your pressing questions with our origin story.

As Chris Johnson and Jim Culhane were graduating from Marquette University, they had dreams of starting a video production business. Accompanied by a former classmate, the team was searching for a name. Why not just call yourself “3 guys from Marquette,” Jim’s sister suggested. From that seemingly joking suggestion, the name Tri-Marq was born. While their classmate went a different route after graduation, Jim and Chris kept the name. And 35 years later, Tri-Marq Communications, Inc. continues to be a thriving business in an industry that is ever-changing in technology, creativity and shrinking bottom lines.

To this day, Tri-Marq maintains a strong connection with Marquette University. Taking on interns and hiring employees who graduated from Marquette, a large portion of our team are Marquette alums (although not a priority). On top of our loyalty to Marquette as alumni, we continue to do work for the university, its programs, and its athletic teams, as we have for almost two decades.

In April 2005, Chris and Jim were awarded the James T. Tiedge Memorial Award by Marquette University, an award that meant the world to them. The award honors alumni whose professional lives reflect the values Dr. Tiedge taught and lived, including the social responsibility of media professionals.

In the Fall of 2003 we were featured on the cover of ‘Marquette’ the Magazine of the Marquette Alumni Association. Pictured, Christopher Johnson Sp ‘86,  David Sinker Sp ‘82, James Culhane Sp ‘86, Dan Bark, Sp‘82, Betsy Johnson, Comm ‘88, Steven Muckerheide Sp ‘83, Patrick Brennan Arts ‘84, Matthew Stippich, Law ‘97 and Deanne (Haviland) Monaghan (deceased), Jour ‘83.

And today, we continue to work with many departments across the university to create videos and events for scholarships, program promotions, and of course, athletics content. Our bond with Marquette University started before the days of Tri-Marq and it is a partnership that we hold near and dear to our hearts.

Check out some of the work we’ve done for Marquette University.

The @wilson.center.arts continues to shine as a co The @wilson.center.arts continues to shine as a cornerstone of creativity and community in Greater Milwaukee. Each year, their "Big Event" brings together supporters to celebrate the power of the arts and the impact of their programming.

Tri-Marq was proud to once again collaborate with the Center to produce two custom videos: one designed to air at the gala, and another evergreen anthem to carry their message year-round.

This year's video tells the story of how the Center came to be and the benefits they have received from our community, as well as fellow artists. By blending custom graphic visuals with archival and current footage, the videos help tell the story of the Center’s mission—and serve as powerful tools for both awareness and fundraising.

Tri-Marq sat down with graduate medical education students at @aurorahealthcare who are in their Transitional Year program to hear stories about their time at Aurora. Utilizing one location-shoot day and a 6-person crew with a 4-camera set, we captured the graduates in a roundtable style. This creative approach captures their conversation in a natural way, allowing them to organically tell stories and experiences, leading the GME program. The roundtable style keeps authenticity at the forefront and encourages audiences to stay engaged with the story, making the video more effective for marketing and recruiting purposes. With the wide range of content recorded, we created additional short, digestible clips that are repurposed for social media.
